Todd Phillips, the director behind the successful Joker franchise, has expressed uncertainty about the possibility of a third installment following the release of the second film, Joker: Folie à Deux. Despite the anticipation surrounding the sequel, Phillips has hinted that he may be ready to step away from the iconic character of Joker. He shared his doubts during an interview with Variety, revealing that while it was enjoyable to explore the Joker’s world for two films, he feels they have said what they intended to say within this universe.
The initial Joker film, released in 2019, was originally envisioned as a standalone project. Phillips even proposed the creation of a new division within DC, referred to as DC Black, when pitching the film to Warner Bros. executives. Despite this, the overwhelming success of the first movie led to the development of a sequel. However, Phillips remained unsure about continuing the story until the sequel was officially confirmed in 2022. The director noted that the decision to make a third film might ultimately hinge on Joaquin Phoenix’s willingness to reprise his role as the Joker, as well as the reception and success of Joker: Folie à Deux.
Set two years after the events of the original film, Joker: Folie à Deux delves deeper into the psyche of Arthur Fleck, now a patient at Arkham State Hospital. The plot centers on his relationship with Harleen Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn, a musical therapist portrayed by Lady Gaga. While not a full-blown musical, the film will incorporate music as a significant element, according to Phillips. Fans can expect the sequel to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
