Gastroenterologist and hepatologist Dr Saurabh Sethi recently revealed his personal gut health routine, sharing that he consumes two specific seeds every morning—chia seeds and basil seeds (commonly known as sabja seeds)—after soaking them overnight.
In a video shared on May 15, Dr Sethi emphasized the importance of including these soaked seeds in your morning diet. He stated that he soaks one tablespoon of each seed overnight and consumes them on an empty stomach the next day. This simple yet effective habit has helped maintain his digestive balance and overall gut well-being.
1. Chia Seeds
Dr Sethi explained that chia seeds are highly absorbent and can soak up to 12 times their weight in water. This allows them to form a gel-like texture that aids digestion, promotes regular bowel movements, and improves nutrient absorption. Their high fiber content makes them a natural choice for gut support.
2. Basil Seeds (Sabja)
Basil seeds, on the other hand, act as natural coolants for the body. Dr Sethi noted that they are rich in fiber, which helps reduce bloating and feeds the good bacteria in our gut microbiome. Their ability to soothe the digestive tract makes them an excellent daily addition.
Nutrition expert Mansi Padechia added further context by highlighting the nutritional profiles of both seeds. A 20-gram serving of basil seeds offers 2 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, and 7 grams of carbohydrates. Meanwhile, the same quantity of chia seeds contains approximately 3 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of carbohydrates.
