Welcome to the future of transportation in Abu Dhabi! The capital city has just launched Uber’s brand new self-driving cars, making it one of the most advanced cities globally. This innovative service, introduced in partnership with WeRide, a leader in autonomous driving technology, marks the first deployment of its kind outside the United States.
Excited to explore where these futuristic rides can take you? You can now enjoy autonomous rides on Saadiyat Island, Yas Island (perfect timing if you’re attending the Abu Dhabi GP), and routes to and from Zayed International Airport.
Although the service is currently limited to specific areas, it will soon expand to more regions in the capital. Booking an autonomous ride is easy—simply select the WeRide vehicles for specific journeys when you choose UberX or Uber Comfort.
During the initial phase, a safety operator will accompany you to ensure a smooth and safe experience for both passengers and pedestrians. This phase is just the beginning, with the commercial launch of fully driverless services expected later in 2025.
Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli, acting director-general of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), stated, “This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing transportation and adopting the latest advanced technologies. We believe that smart transport services, such as self-driving vehicles, will offer a unique and safe experience for passengers, contributing to more sustainable and efficient transportation solutions in Abu Dhabi. We are committed to improving the quality of life for our citizens through smart solutions and look forward to further collaborations with our partners.”
Jennifer Li, chief financial officer and head of International Business at WeRide, added, “WeRide prioritises safety with rigorously validated autonomous driving technology. As the first publicly listed Robotaxi company, WeRide has over 1,800 days of public operational experience, setting new benchmarks for autonomous vehicle performance.”
