The BAFTA Film Awards 2026 in London delivered plenty of memorable moments but the ceremony briefly took an unexpected turn when host Alan Cumming paused the live broadcast following the use of strong language by a nominee in the audience.
The prestigious event took place at the Royal Festival Hall and brought together global film stars including Alia Bhatt and Farhan Akhtar from India. While the spotlight was meant to remain on cinematic achievements an unscripted incident drew attention midway through the evening.
John Davidson a BAFTA nominee who lives with Tourette’s syndrome was seated inside the auditorium when his involuntary verbal tics were picked up by live microphones. During early segments of the show his comments were audible on the BBC broadcast prompting visible reactions from presenters on stage.
The situation escalated during the presentation of the Best Visual Effects award by Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo when Davidson used an offensive racial slur. The moment caused brief confusion among the presenters and audience members watching live.
Later in the ceremony Alan Cumming addressed the interruption directly. Pausing the show he acknowledged that viewers may have heard strong and unplanned language earlier in the night. He explained that the words were the result of involuntary tics linked to Tourette’s syndrome and thanked the audience for their patience and understanding. Cumming also emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone present.
At one point during the evening Davidson exited the auditorium. The incident sparked discussion online around live broadcasting challenges disability awareness and inclusivity at major public events.
John Davidson is widely known as the inspiration behind the film I Swear in which he is portrayed by Robert Aramayo. The actor won the Rising Star Award at this year’s ceremony. Davidson has long been an advocate for Tourette’s awareness and received recognition for his advocacy work from Queen Elizabeth II in 2018.
Despite the interruption the awards night continued smoothly. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner securing six awards including Best Film. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was also honoured for original screenplay musical score and supporting actress Wunmi Mosaku. Indian cinema marked a milestone as Boong won Best Children’s and Family Film.
