Apple has initiated discussions with third-party developers to integrate PlayStation VR2 controller support into their games. According to a report by Nithya P Nair and edited by Manas Mitul, Apple has been working closely with Sony to enhance the gaming experience on the Vision Pro headset. This collaboration aims to include support for third-party VR hand controllers in the visionOS software. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg notes that this partnership began earlier this year, with Apple reaching out to Sony to start this project.
The effort within Sony has been extensive, with months of development dedicated to this collaboration. Gurman also reveals that Apple has been in talks with third-party developers, encouraging them to incorporate PlayStation VR2 controller support into their games. Although the announcement of this support was planned for a few weeks ago, it has been postponed.
Beyond gaming, these controllers are expected to improve productivity tasks and media editing within visionOS. They will be available for purchase through Apple’s online stores and retail outlets. The current version of Vision Pro supports PlayStation 5 and Xbox controllers but lacks the precise control needed for immersive VR gaming.
Additionally, Apple has prototyped a wand-like tool for the Vision Pro, intended for precise control in applications like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop. The Apple Vision Pro headset, unveiled at WWDC 2023, is now available in select countries, including the US, China, Europe, and Japan, starting at $3,499. It supports both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, operating on visionOS with configurations of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage. The device is powered by Apple’s M2 processor and an R1 chip.
There are also rumors of a more affordable version of the Vision headset launching early next year, priced around $2,000. This version is expected to feature a less powerful processor and be made of more cost-effective materials.
