Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has dismissed ongoing speculation about Lionel Messi’s involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the media to give the football icon space to make his own decision.
Argentina has officially secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first South American team to qualify. The defending world champions dominated the CONMEBOL qualifiers and capped off their qualification campaign with a 4-1 victory over Brazil in Buenos Aires.
Argentina Shines Even Without Messi
Despite Lionel Messi’s absence due to an adductor muscle injury, Argentina displayed top-tier attacking prowess with goals from Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone. The convincing win against one of South America’s football powerhouses further emphasized Argentina’s strength as a unit.
Following the team’s qualification, coach Lionel Scaloni was asked about Messi’s potential participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, given that the Argentine captain missed the most recent international fixtures. Scaloni, however, remained non-committal.
“We will see what happens. There’s plenty of time,” Scaloni said during a press conference. “We must take it one game at a time; otherwise, we will be discussing this topic for the rest of the year.”
Scaloni Calls for Patience on Messi’s Decision
Messi’s triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was widely viewed as a dream ending to his international career. At the time, many speculated that it would be his final World Cup appearance, considering he was 35 years old during the tournament. However, despite now playing in the MLS for Inter Miami, Messi continues to perform at an elite level.
With the 2026 World Cup set to be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Messi could have the opportunity to represent Argentina on American soil, where he currently plays club football.
However, Scaloni remained firm in shutting down the ongoing questions about Messi’s future.
“We need to leave him alone; he will decide whenever he wants,” Scaloni said. “Let’s not drive him crazy with this.”
A Potential Historic World Cup Appearance
If Messi chooses to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he would become the first player in history to appear in six World Cup tournaments—an honor that could also be shared by his longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo, should the Portuguese superstar qualify.
Regardless of Messi’s final decision, Argentina has proven its depth and quality in recent matches, showing that the team remains a formidable force on the global stage.
