Arsenal were denied the chance to significantly widen their lead at the top of the Premier League after being held to a tense 0-0 draw by Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium. In a match played under difficult weather conditions, both sides showed flashes of quality but ultimately lacked the cutting edge needed to find a decisive breakthrough.

The result means Arsenal missed an opportunity to move eight points clear at the summit, although they still extended their advantage over second-placed Manchester City to six points. With City enduring a run of three consecutive draws, the pressure was firmly on Mikel Arteta’s side to capitalise and edge closer to a first league title in more than two decades.

The atmosphere inside the Emirates was electric ahead of kick-off, with fans sensing a pivotal moment in the title race. However, heavy rain and swirling winds caused by Storm Goretti made fluent football difficult, contributing to a scrappy contest that never fully ignited.

Despite being under sustained pressure in the first half, Liverpool created the clearest chance before the interval. A loose backpass from William Saliba almost proved costly as Conor Bradley attempted an audacious lob over stranded goalkeeper David Raya, only for the ball to strike the underside of the crossbar and bounce away from danger.

Arsenal, who had scored in every home league match prior to this fixture, struggled to break down a disciplined Liverpool defence. Their attacking play lacked rhythm and precision, and they failed to seriously test Alisson Becker in the opening period.

The second half saw a shift in momentum as Liverpool began to dominate possession and territory. However, the visitors were significantly weakened in attack, missing key forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike through injury, while Mohamed Salah was unavailable due to international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. This shortage of firepower was evident as Liverpool’s promising build-up play rarely translated into clear chances.

Jeremie Frimpong’s pace caused Arsenal occasional problems down the flank, but his final delivery did not match the danger of his runs. Dominik Szoboszlai came close to producing another moment of magic from a free-kick, but his dipping effort dropped just wide of the target.

At the other end, Arsenal’s recent attacking struggles continued. Viktor Gyokeres endured another frustrating evening before being substituted, extending his run without an open-play goal to ten matches. Arteta responded by turning to his bench, introducing Gabriel Jesus, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli in search of a late winner.

Despite the attacking reinforcements, Arsenal managed just a handful of efforts in the latter stages. Their first shot on target in the second half did not arrive until stoppage time, when Jesus and Martinelli both failed to trouble Alisson with tame attempts.

For Liverpool, the draw extended their unbeaten league run to ten matches and strengthened their hold on a top-four position. The point moves them three clear of Newcastle and Manchester United in the race for Champions League qualification, underlining the importance of the result despite their fading title ambitions.

While neither side will be entirely satisfied, Arsenal remain firmly in control of the title race, and Liverpool continue to show resilience and consistency as the season enters its decisive phase.
