Global music powerhouse Bad Bunny is officially making his transition from sold-out arenas to the silver screen, taking on his first-ever leading role in an ambitious historical film titled Porto Rico. The project marks a major milestone in the Puerto Rican star’s career and places him at the centre of a powerful story rooted in history identity and resistance.
Fresh from international acclaim including a Grammy win and a headline-grabbing Super Bowl halftime appearance, the 31-year-old artist whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio is expanding his creative reach. In Porto Rico, he will star alongside acclaimed actors Javier Bardem Edward Norton and Viggo Mortensen.
The film is being directed by renowned Puerto Rican artist Residente also known as René Pérez and is executive produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The story has been in development since 2023 and draws inspiration from the life of José Maldonado Román also known as Águila Blanca a revolutionary figure who led resistance movements against Spanish colonial rule in Puerto Rico during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Described by its creators as a deeply personal project Porto Rico aims to explore themes of rebellion culture and national identity. Residente has shared that the film represents a lifelong dream to bring Puerto Rico’s complex and often disputed history to the global stage with honesty and intensity.
Edward Norton has praised the project for its emotional and political depth comparing it to classic cinematic epics that combine gripping storytelling with historical reckoning. He also highlighted the creative chemistry between Residente and Bad Bunny predicting that their collaboration will deliver a visually striking and emotionally charged experience.
