India marked a proud moment on the global cinema stage at the BAFTA Awards 2026 as Boong became the first Indian film ever to win the Best Children and Family Film award. The historic victory places Indian regional cinema firmly in the international spotlight and celebrates storytelling from Manipur on one of the world’s most prestigious platforms.

Directed by filmmaker Lakshmipriya Devi Boong is a Manipuri-language debut feature that stood as the only Indian nomination at this year’s British Academy Film Awards. The win was officially announced by BAFTA and warmly received by film lovers across the country.

The film is produced by a team led by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani alongside Vikesh Bhutani Alan McAlex and Shujaat Saudagar. Actor and producer Farhan Akhtar attended the ceremony in London and accepted the award on behalf of the team. The cast includes Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam whose performances bring emotional depth to the story.

Boong competed against major international titles such as Arco Lilo and Stitch and Zootopia 2 eventually emerging as the standout winner in the category.

The film’s journey has been equally impressive on the festival circuit. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024 in the Discovery section and went on to screen at prominent events including the Warsaw International Film Festival MAMI Mumbai Film Festival the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in 2025.

Set in the valley of Manipur the story follows a young boy named Boong who wants to surprise his mother with what he believes is the greatest gift of all bringing his estranged father back home. His innocent quest leads him toward an emotional discovery and a hopeful new beginning highlighting themes of family resilience and love.

The 79th British Academy Film Awards were held at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Actor Alia Bhatt also made headlines as she presented an award at the ceremony marking her BAFTA debut appearance and adding to India’s strong presence at the event.
