The upcoming presidential election at FC Barcelona has taken a dramatic turn after candidate Victor Font reportedly explored the possibility of signing Erling Haaland from Manchester City.
According to reports, two members of Font’s campaign team met senior Manchester City officials in Madrid to discuss the potential transfer. The meeting involved Carles Planchart and Xavier Aguilar from Font’s side, who held talks with City CEO Ferran Soriano and sporting director Hugo Viana. The discussions reportedly took place at the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid.
The Barcelona presidential race currently features Font competing against the club’s current leader Joan Laporta. By pursuing one of the world’s most sought after strikers, Font may be trying to strengthen his campaign and attract support from club members ahead of the vote.
Reports suggest that Font’s representatives requested preferential consideration if Haaland decides to leave Manchester City in the future. The Norwegian striker remains under contract with the English champions until 2034, but speculation has grown that he could consider leaving earlier if the right opportunity appears.
Meanwhile the future of Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona remains uncertain. His current contract with the Catalan club expires on June 30 and sources indicate that if Font becomes president the club may decide not to extend the veteran striker’s deal.
However Laporta has indicated that he would prefer to keep Lewandowski at the club for another season. The Barcelona president praised the forward’s contribution and highlighted how the player joined the club during a challenging period after leaving FC Bayern Munich.
At the same time Laporta’s camp believes the club could still pursue major signings in the transfer market. A member of his team recently said that Barcelona could potentially move for top players such as Haaland or Julián Álvarez if financial conditions allow.
Despite the ambitious plans both sides have acknowledged that the club must remain cautious with its salary structure and transfer commitments. Barcelona’s leadership has emphasized the importance of maintaining financial stability while rebuilding a competitive squad capable of challenging for major trophies.
With the election approaching and transfer rumours intensifying the future direction of Barcelona both on and off the pitch could soon depend on the outcome of the presidential race.
