Lionel Messi’s recent late-night visit to Barcelona’s Camp Nou has reignited emotional memories and stirred speculation among fans about a possible return to the Catalan club. The Argentine icon, who left FC Barcelona in 2021 under difficult circumstances, shared a heartfelt social media post expressing his wish to one day say a proper goodbye on the pitch he once called home.

However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has firmly ruled out any possibility of Messi rejoining the team as a player, calling such expectations “unrealistic.” Speaking on Catalunya Radio, Laporta stated that he would not raise false hopes among fans. “Out of respect for Messi, for the professionals at the club and for our supporters, it would be inappropriate to speculate about something that cannot happen,” he clarified.

Messi’s departure in 2021, when he joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, left both the player and fans without the emotional farewell they had long awaited. Now, as Messi continues his career with Inter Miami, Laporta has promised that the club will ensure the legendary forward receives the tribute he deserves once the Camp Nou renovation is complete.

“Things didn’t end the way we hoped, but we will honour him in the best possible way,” Laporta said, confirming plans for a special tribute match to celebrate Messi’s extraordinary contributions to Barcelona’s history.

During his time with the club, Messi won six Ballon d’Or titles, numerous Champions League trophies, and scored over 600 goals — achievements that have forever defined his legacy in European football. Laporta added that it would be fitting for Messi to receive “the greatest tribute match in the world” before a crowd of 105,000 at the newly updated Camp Nou.

While Messi’s playing return appears unlikely, his emotional connection with Barcelona remains unbreakable. The club, meanwhile, looks to the future with emerging stars like Lamine Yamal, who now wears Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt, symbolising the continuation of a new era in Catalan football.
