European football delivered another dramatic night in the UEFA Champions League as Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid recorded commanding victories while Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona were left needing strong performances in the second leg.
Bayern Munich produced a dominant display against Atalanta, winning 6 1 despite leaving star striker Harry Kane on the bench. With Kane not starting the match, several Bayern players stepped up in attack. Michael Olise scored twice while Serge Gnabry and Nicolas Jackson both scored and assisted goals. Additional strikes from Josip Stanisic and Jamal Musiala helped the German champions take a huge step toward the quarterfinal stage.
Another high scoring encounter took place in Madrid where Atletico Madrid defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5 2. The match quickly turned in Atletico’s favour after Tottenham coach Igor Tudor made the bold decision to start backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky instead of regular first choice Guglielmo Vicario.
Kinsky struggled early in the game and mistakes contributed to Atletico scoring three goals within the first 15 minutes. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring before Antoine Griezmann added another. Julian Alvarez also capitalised on a goalkeeping error to extend the lead. Later in the match Robin Le Normand added another goal as Atletico secured a convincing victory.
Liverpool, however, suffered a narrow defeat against Galatasaray in Istanbul. A seventh minute header from Mario Lemina proved to be the difference as the Turkish champions claimed a 1 0 advantage ahead of the second leg at Anfield. Galatasaray had previously eliminated Juventus in the earlier round and are continuing an impressive European campaign.
Barcelona also faced difficulties in their away match against Newcastle United. Newcastle looked set to secure victory after Harvey Barnes scored late in the match. However Barcelona earned a penalty deep into stoppage time when Malick Thiaw fouled Dani Olmo inside the box.
Eighteen year old Lamine Yamal calmly converted the penalty in the 96th minute past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, rescuing a 1 1 draw for Barcelona just before the final whistle.
With the second leg matches approaching, the quarterfinal race in the Champions League remains wide open. Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid appear to have a strong advantage while Liverpool and Barcelona will aim for crucial victories in their upcoming home matches.
