Punjab Kings may have secured an impressive victory over Chennai Super Kings, but their captain Shreyas Iyer found himself under scrutiny once again after the match. Despite leading his side to a comfortable chase at Chepauk, Iyer was penalized by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over-rate, marking the team’s second offence in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.

PBKS delivered a strong performance both with the bat and ball to chase down a challenging 210-run target with ease, finishing the match with eight balls remaining. While the bowlers conceded some runs in the latter stages, the early breakthroughs and a powerful batting display ensured a dominant win over the five-time champions.

However, the post-match developments overshadowed part of the celebration. As per IPL regulations, repeated slow over-rate violations attract stricter penalties. Having already been fined earlier in the season, Iyer’s latest offence resulted in a doubled fine of INR 24 lakh. Additionally, all members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were fined INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, depending on whichever amount was lower.

The penalty falls under the IPL’s Code of Conduct related to maintaining minimum over rates, and reflects the league’s strict stance on time management during matches.

On the field, Iyer praised his opening pair Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh for setting up the chase with an explosive start. The duo added 61 runs in just over four overs, providing a strong foundation that allowed the rest of the batting lineup to maintain control throughout the innings.

Iyer acknowledged that the aggressive approach of his openers has been a consistent strength, helping the team establish momentum early and maintain rhythm during crucial chases. Their performance proved instrumental in securing a crucial win for Punjab Kings in the tournament.
