Dame Patricia Routledge, the celebrated British actress best known for her legendary portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 96. The news was confirmed through a statement by the PA agency, leaving fans and the entertainment world mourning the loss of one of Britain’s finest comedic talents.

Born on February 17, 1929, in Birkenhead, Merseyside, Routledge’s remarkable acting journey began at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1952, where she made her debut as Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her stage performances soon established her as a powerhouse of British theatre, leading to roles in radio, television, and Broadway.

Her breakthrough moment came with her unforgettable performance as Hyacinth Bucket — the pretentious, social-climbing matriarch in Keeping Up Appearances. The sitcom, which ran from 1990 to 1995, remains a cornerstone of British comedy and introduced Routledge’s exceptional comedic timing to millions of viewers around the world.

Beyond her most famous role, Patricia Routledge’s career was decorated with multiple honors and achievements. In 1968, she received the prestigious Tony Award for her role in Darling of the Day, showcasing her range beyond television comedy.
