A senior cardiologist with more than four decades of clinical experience has sparked fresh debate around eggs and heart health by advising people to stop throwing away egg yolks. Dr Alok Chopra, a Delhi-based functional medicine expert, says the long-standing habit of consuming only egg whites may do more harm than good and could lead to inflammation nutrient gaps and digestive issues.
Addressing the popular egg white omelette trend Dr Chopra explained that eggs are designed by nature to be eaten whole. According to him the yolk is not just a source of taste but a crucial component that balances the protein in egg whites. When egg whites are consumed without the yolk they may act as an inflammatory protein in many individuals potentially triggering issues such as gut irritation joint discomfort and nutrient deficiencies.
Dr Chopra also challenged the fear surrounding egg yolks and cholesterol. He pointed out that while eggs do contain cholesterol modern science shows that dietary cholesterol has little impact on blood cholesterol levels for most people. In fact the human body produces the majority of its cholesterol on its own making the exclusion of yolks unnecessary for heart health.
By avoiding the yolk he noted people miss out on essential nutrients including healthy fats fat-soluble vitamins omega-3 fatty acids antioxidants like beta carotene and biotin. He added that eating egg whites alone may increase the risk of biotin deficiency and in some cases exposure to food-borne bacteria if eggs are not handled or cooked properly.
Beyond the egg itself Dr Chopra stressed the importance of quality. He advised choosing organic pasture-raised eggs from free-range hens that have access to sunlight and natural feed stating that the nutritional value of an egg largely depends on how the chicken is raised.
His message encourages people to move away from food fear and instead focus on balance moderation and understanding nutrition rather than following outdated diet myths.
