Persistent leg pain or numbness, especially when it appears during walking and eases with rest, may indicate Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). Vascular surgeon Dr Sumit Kapadia, a specialist in varicose veins with 18 years of experience, emphasizes that early recognition of PAD is critical to prevent serious complications such as restricted blood flow, tissue damage, or surgery.
Many individuals dismiss leg pain or cramps as normal aging, particularly if the discomfort fades after resting. However, these symptoms could be an early warning of blocked arteries in the legs. PAD occurs when plaque made of fats, cholesterol, and other substances narrows the arteries, reducing circulation to the limbs. Detecting these signs early can allow timely treatment, including lifestyle changes, medications, or interventions that may avoid surgery.
Dr Kapadia highlights six primary symptoms of PAD to watch for:
1. Leg pain or cramps while walking
Pain, aching, or cramping in the legs during activity that improves with rest is a hallmark sign of restricted blood flow.
2. Numbness or weakness
Reduced circulation may cause one or both legs to feel weak or numb, indicating potential arterial blockages.
3. Temperature difference between legs
A noticeable coldness in one leg compared to the other can signal compromised circulation.
4. Slow-healing wounds
Cuts, sores, or blisters on the feet or lower legs that take longer than usual to heal may point to PAD.
5. Shiny skin or hair loss
Legs may develop a smooth, shiny appearance or experience hair thinning due to insufficient blood supply.
6. Weak or reduced pulse
A diminished pulse in the lower limbs is another sign of arterial narrowing that requires medical evaluation.
Dr Kapadia stresses that these symptoms should not be ignored, even if they seem mild. Early diagnosis of PAD can help prevent progression and serious complications, improving overall vascular health.
