Megalopolis Box Office Collection: Francis Ford Coppola’s Grand Vision Stumbles While Devara Triumphs
In a surprising turn of events at the North American box office, the Telugu film Devara Part 1, starring Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan, has outperformed Francis Ford Coppola’s highly anticipated Megalopolis. The clash between these films resulted in a challenging opening for Megalopolis, which struggled from the outset. Despite a wide release, Megalopolis faced mixed reviews and negative word of mouth, leading to an underwhelming $4 million in its opening weekend, landing it in the sixth spot at the box office. In contrast, Devara Part 1, despite a smaller release, garnered $5.1 million in the same territories. The weekend was led by The Wild Robot, which grossed $35 million domestically.
Internationally, Megalopolis also faced difficulties, earning only $2.1 million, bringing its worldwide weekend total to $6.1 million. This is significantly lower than Devara’s $33 million and The Wild Robot’s $45 million. Given the current trends, Megalopolis is expected to struggle to recover its $120 million investment.
Megalopolis, a sci-fi epic directed by Francis Ford Coppola, features a star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman. The film, which took 40 years from conception to release, was initially rejected by numerous studios before Coppola invested $80 million of his own money. With a production budget of $120 million, Megalopolis hit theaters on Friday, September 27.
