Former India captain and ex-chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has stirred debate after questioning the selection of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the upcoming India vs Australia ODI series starting October 19. Both senior players, who have not played any competitive cricket since IPL 2025, were named in the Shubman Gill-led squad, marking their return to the 50-over format.

In an interview with mid-day, Vengsarkar expressed doubts about how the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel evaluated the form and fitness of the two veterans. He highlighted that both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test cricket and T20Is, leaving them active only in ODIs—a format India plays less frequently.

“Rohit and Virat are legends of Indian cricket, but if they are playing just one format, selectors must evaluate if that’s sustainable. It’s difficult to assess their form and fitness after such a long break. Perhaps their selection was based on past records rather than current performance,” said Vengsarkar.

He further added that although the duo has served Indian cricket with distinction, their limited participation could affect the team’s long-term planning. “Since they’ve not been playing Tests or T20s, selectors must decide whether to continue with them or groom players who can represent India across all formats,” Vengsarkar remarked.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, during a press conference, confirmed that both players had cleared their mandatory fitness assessments, but hinted that their inclusion does not guarantee a spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad. The upcoming three-match series against Australia will likely determine their future in India’s one-day setup.

Vengsarkar urged Agarkar and the selection committee to focus on building for the future. “It’s up to the selectors whether they continue with Rohit and Virat or look forward to young players who are available for all formats. The decision will shape the direction of Indian cricket,” he concluded.

The series, starting later this month, will serve as a testing ground not only for the senior pros but also for India’s next-generation cricketers aiming to establish themselves in the ODI setup.
