Dubai is home to one of the most efficient and reliable public transport systems in the world, and there’s a hidden gem within it that many commuters don’t know about — the 30-minute transfer rule. If you’re a frequent rider of the Dubai Metro, tram, or RTA buses, understanding this little-known rule can significantly enhance your daily commute and save you money.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai offers a smart feature within its nol card system that allows passengers to switch between modes of public transportation — such as the metro, tram, or bus — without being charged for a new trip, provided the transfer happens within 30 minutes of tapping out from the previous ride.
Here’s how it works: Dubai is divided into seven fare zones. The cost of your trip using the nol card depends on the number of zones you pass through. However, if you end a metro journey and then hop on a tram or bus within 30 minutes, it will still count as one continuous trip. This means you won’t pay extra for the second leg of your commute — the fare is calculated based on the entire route and zones traveled, not the number of transport types used.
For example, if you take the metro from Zone 1 and then switch to a bus in Zone 2 within half an hour, your total fare is based on a two-zone journey — not two separate fares. This rule is especially helpful for those living or working in areas where the metro doesn’t go the full distance.
However, there are a few rules to keep in mind. The total journey must be completed within 180 minutes (three hours), and you’re allowed a maximum of three transfers within that period.
The type of nol card you use also affects your fare:
- Red Ticket (for occasional riders): Dhs4 within one zone, Dhs6 between two adjacent zones, Dhs8.50 for more than two zones.
- Silver and Personal Cards (for regular users): Dhs3 within one zone, Dhs5 for two zones, Dhs7.50 for more than two.
- Gold Card (for access to gold class cabins): Dhs6 within one zone, Dhs10 for two zones, Dhs15 for three or more zones.
Children under five years old can travel free of cost. Holders of the Personal nol Card can get a 50% discount if they are students, senior citizens, or registered social affairs beneficiaries. People of determination (those with disabilities) are eligible for free rides when using the personal nol card.
Knowing and using this 30-minute rule is an easy way to stretch your dirhams and make every public transport trip more affordable. Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or exploring Dubai, make the most of your nol card by planning your trips smartly.
