As Diwali 2025 approaches, many are looking for ways to achieve radiant, glowing skin for the festive season. Homemade face masks, including ubtan, rosewater treatments, and natural DIY packs, have become a popular go-to for a pre-Diwali glow. But do these traditional remedies really deliver the luminous skin you want? Experts share their insights.
Homemade masks have been used in India for generations. Ingredients like sandalwood, saffron, gram flour, dairy, coconut oil, sesame oil, and rose water offer benefits such as anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant protection, gentle exfoliation, toning, improved circulation, and enhanced skin texture. Dr Rinky Kapoor, celebrity dermatologist, explains that these natural packs are cost-effective and free from synthetic preservatives and fragrances, making them appealing for many.
However, there are risks to using DIY masks. Fresh ingredients can harbor bacteria, potentially causing skin infections or allergic reactions. Improper pH balance from certain ingredients such as lemon juice, essential oils, or enzymes can disrupt the skin barrier, increase photosensitivity, cause pigmentation, or lead to chemical irritation. Patch tests are highly recommended, especially for those with sensitive skin, active acne, rosacea, or eczema.
For a safe and effective Diwali glow, hydration is key. Dr Anuradha Sharma, medical advisor at Fixderma, recommends a hydration-focused skincare routine:
- Gentle cleansing: Use a pH-balanced or hydrating gel cleanser to avoid stripping natural oils.
- Double-layer hydration: Apply a hydrating toner followed by a serum containing hyaluronic acid, panthenol, or copper peptides, then lock moisture in with a ceramide or squalane-based moisturizer.
- Sun protection: Use broad-spectrum SPF daily to prevent dehydration and dullness.
- Internal hydration: Drink plenty of water and consume hydrating foods such as cucumber, oranges, and coconut water.
- Night care: Apply a lightweight sleeping mask or hydrating cream to support overnight skin recovery.
While homemade masks offer some benefits, hydration, protection, and consistency remain the most reliable ways to achieve a radiant Diwali glow without risking skin irritation.
