A rare yet serious medical condition known as Aplastic anemia is gaining attention as experts highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Unlike common forms of anaemia caused by iron deficiency this condition involves a failure of the body’s blood producing system making it potentially life threatening if left untreated.
According to Dr Sandip Shah, aplastic anemia occurs when the bone marrow is unable to produce sufficient red blood cells white blood cells and platelets. This condition is often described as bone marrow failure because the body’s ability to generate healthy blood cells is severely reduced.
As a result patients may develop severe fatigue due to low red blood cells along with an increased risk of infections caused by reduced white blood cells and a higher chance of bleeding due to low platelet counts.
Who is at Risk and What Causes It
Aplastic anemia can affect individuals of any age but is more commonly observed in younger adults. In many cases the exact cause remains unclear however several contributing factors have been identified.
These include genetic conditions exposure to harmful chemicals such as benzene certain medications radiation viral infections and autoimmune reactions where the immune system attacks the body’s own stem cells.
Common Symptoms to Watch For
Early recognition of symptoms is crucial for timely treatment. Patients may experience ongoing tiredness shortness of breath and general weakness. Other warning signs include frequent infections recurring fever easy bruising bleeding from different parts of the body and mouth ulcers.
To confirm the condition doctors usually perform a bone marrow biopsy which helps assess the production of blood cells and detect abnormalities in the marrow.
Treatment Options and Recovery Chances
Treatment for aplastic anemia has improved significantly in recent years. For younger and otherwise healthy patients a hematopoietic stem cell transplant is considered the most effective option especially when a matched donor is available.
With advancements in medical procedures survival and cure rates in such cases can reach up to 90 percent. For older patients or those who are not suitable for transplant doctors may recommend a combination of immunosuppressive therapies which can help restore bone marrow function and improve survival outcomes.
Challenges in Access to Treatment
Despite medical progress access to treatment remains a challenge in countries like India. Limited availability of specialised healthcare centres along with financial constraints often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Experts also emphasise the need for greater awareness about stem cell donation as well as stronger public participation in donor registries which can significantly improve survival chances for patients.
