Turmeric is often praised as a powerful natural remedy in Indian kitchens but a medical expert has warned that consuming it on its own may offer little benefit. Dr Pooja Reddy a Hyderabad based dermatologist recently shared insights explaining that turmeric without the right combinations is poorly absorbed by the body making popular turmeric shots and plain capsules largely ineffective.

According to Dr Reddy turmeric contains curcumin the compound responsible for its anti inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However when taken alone curcumin is rapidly broken down by the liver before it can enter the bloodstream. She explains that the body absorbs less than one percent of curcumin when turmeric is consumed by itself meaning most of its potential health benefits are lost.

The solution lies in pairing turmeric with black pepper. Black pepper contains piperine a natural compound that slows down the breakdown of curcumin in the liver and helps it pass through the gut wall. Dr Reddy highlights that studies show this combination can increase curcumin absorption by nearly 2000 percent allowing significantly more of the active compound to reach the bloodstream.

There is also a third essential component fat. Curcumin is fat soluble which means it needs a source of fat to dissolve properly and be absorbed by the body. Traditional Indian practices often combine turmeric black pepper and ghee and Dr Reddy points out that this is not accidental. This trio acts as a natural delivery system refined over centuries and now supported by modern science.

For those using turmeric to support skin health reduce inflammation or improve overall wellness the advice is simple avoid consuming it alone. Instead always pair it with a pinch of black pepper and a healthy fat source such as ghee or oil to unlock its true potential.
