A significant development occurred on Friday May 16 2025 when Dubai Finance and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) signed a strategic agreement to accelerate the implementation of the city’s digital payment ecosystem. This agreement marks a new phase in Dubai’s journey toward eliminating the need for coins and paper notes.
Originally introduced in October 2024 the Dubai Cashless Strategy aims to replace cash transactions with digital payments powered by modern banking platforms credit cards and mobile apps. Projections estimate that by 2026 nearly 90 percent of all payments in Dubai will be conducted digitally. This move is expected to drive economic growth by more than Dhs8 billion annually. As part of the initiative Dubai is promoting technological innovation including AI-based tools and contactless payment systems. The collaboration between DIFC and Dubai Finance will also involve hosting special workshops designed to help businesses transition to digital systems and provide value-added tools for residents tourists and the workforce alike.
The agreement signed in the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum emphasizes three major pillars of the Dubai Cashless Strategy—governance innovation and community inclusion. This ensures a well-rounded approach to creating a sustainable and inclusive digital economy.
During a session chaired by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Crown Prince of Dubai the city reinforced its goal of ranking among the world’s top five cashless cities. The strategy was reviewed alongside long-term plans for education real estate and transportation at a meeting of The Executive Council of Dubai on October 1 2024.
