Dubai Police Confiscate Nearly 4,500 E-Scooters and Bicycles in Traffic Safety Crackdown

Date:

Dubai Police have significantly ramped up their traffic enforcement efforts, focusing on the safety of e-scooter, bicycle, and electric bike riders. This initiative, spearheaded by Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs, underscores the department’s dedication to fostering a culture of road safety for all commuters.

“Dubai Police are dedicated to enhancing road safety through intensified traffic control operations,” stated Al Ghaithi. “These efforts target traffic violations and reckless driving to create safer roads and reduce fatalities.”

Safety Concerns: The growing popularity of e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes has brought with it increased safety risks, particularly when these vehicles are used in unauthorized areas or on public roads. In response, Dubai Police have launched ongoing public awareness campaigns to prioritize rider safety.

Accident Statistics: Data from the first half of 2024 paints a concerning picture, with accidents involving e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes resulting in four fatalities, one severe injury, 19 moderate injuries, and five minor injuries. Additionally, over 7,800 traffic violations were recorded, leading to the confiscation of nearly 4,500 e-scooters and bicycles.

Major General Al Ghaithi highlighted several traffic violations that incur fines, including exceeding the 60km/h speed limit on designated roads, dangerous riding, carrying passengers on e-scooters, and riding against traffic.

Safety Measures for Cyclists: Police stress the importance of adhering to safety measures such as using designated lanes, wearing appropriate clothing and helmets, and avoiding riding at night or in adverse weather conditions.

Adhering to Traffic Rules: Major General Al Ghaithi urged cyclists and e-scooter riders to strictly follow traffic rules to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.

Public Collaboration: The police are calling for public cooperation in promoting road safety. Residents are encouraged to report any unsafe or dangerous behavior on the roads through the “Police Eye” service or by calling the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901.

By working together, Dubai Police and the community aim to create a safer environment for everyone using Dubai’s transportation network.
