Dubai has shared new details about the highly anticipated Dubai Loop underground transport system supported by Elon Musk’s Boring Company. The futuristic mobility project is designed to reduce congestion and improve travel efficiency across some of the city’s busiest districts. According to Mattar Al Tayer Director General of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority the first four stations of the project have now been confirmed.
The pilot phase of the Dubai Loop will include a 6.4km underground route with stations located at Zabeel Dubai Mall Parking ICD Brookfield Place DIFC 2 and Burj Khalifa. This initial section is expected to serve approximately 13,000 passengers per day and will act as a foundation for the larger network. The first phase is part of a Dhs2.5 billion investment aimed at transforming urban mobility in Dubai.
Following the pilot stage the Dubai Loop will expand into a full network stretching up to 22.2km with a total of 19 stations. The expanded route will connect key areas including Dubai World Trade Centre the financial district DIFC and Business Bay. The system will allow passengers to travel directly to their destination without intermediate stops and reach speeds of up to 160km per hour. Once fully operational the Dubai Loop is projected to handle up to 30,000 passengers per day.
The project was first announced in 2025 during the World Governments Summit where Elon Musk described the Loop as a fast seamless underground travel experience similar to a wormhole between destinations. The tunnels will be built using advanced construction techniques designed to minimise surface disruption while reducing costs and construction time. Each tunnel will measure 3.6 metres in diameter and will be dedicated to vehicle transport.
Elon Musk’s Boring Company brings proven experience to the project having already developed the Las Vegas Loop which is an all electric zero emissions underground transport system. Since 2021 the Las Vegas Loop has transported more than two million passengers. Dubai’s version is expected to deliver similar benefits offering a reliable year round transport option less affected by weather conditions and road congestion.
