Dubai Zoo’s Former Site to Be Transformed into Eco-Inspired Residential Urban Oasis

Date:

A beloved chapter in Dubai’s heritage is being reimagined. The iconic site where Dubai Zoo once stood is set to become a thoughtfully designed residential development that pays tribute to its natural legacy. The historic zoo, which originally opened its gates in 1967 and housed over 100 species, officially closed in 2017 with its animals relocated to Dubai Safari Park. Now, the land in Jumeirah will take on a new life, honouring its past while embracing a greener, community-centric future.

Leading this transformation is investment firm Shamal, which has unveiled plans for a sustainable low-rise neighborhood designed around walkability, green space, and organic architecture. Named the “Urban Oasis,” this new development will feature 90 uniquely crafted homes nestled within landscaped courtyards, a large central park, and mature trees preserved from the original site.

The project reflects a vision of harmony between heritage and contemporary living. Inspired by the lush greenery and organic clusters that once characterized the zoo, the development will feature community amenities such as wellness areas, a family pool, a children’s play zone, a clubhouse, lounges, and fitness facilities – all designed to foster connection and tranquility.

Shamal CEO Abdulla Binhabtoor emphasized that this is more than a real estate project – it’s a heartfelt tribute to a cherished Dubai landmark. “This redevelopment goes beyond architecture. It’s a meaningful reinterpretation of a site that resonates with generations of residents,” he stated. “Our goal is to create a space where heritage is preserved through mindful design and community spirit.”

Collaborating on the design is DXB Lab, with lead architect Khalid Al Najjar guiding the architectural direction. Al Najjar noted that their creative process was grounded in studying the site’s ecological and emotional history. “We explored the landscape and emotional imprint of the old zoo,” he explained. “Our architecture reflects the zoo’s natural DNA, transforming it into a modern living experience that still feels rooted in Jumeirah’s character.”

The Urban Oasis will blend nature with urban living, focusing on sustainable landscaping, pedestrian-friendly planning, and residential comfort. By incorporating elements of memory and modernity, the development aims to offer a serene lifestyle environment while preserving the soul of one of Dubai’s earliest landmarks.
