Spending long hours sitting at a desk may feel normal for most office workers, but experts warn that this habit can take a serious toll on your gut health. Dr Senthil Ganesan, senior consultant surgical gastroenterologist at SIMS Hospital in Chennai, explains that remaining seated for extended periods slows down gut motility—the wave-like muscle movements that push food through the intestines.
“When you sit still for too long, your intestines don’t get the regular movement they need,” Dr Ganesan highlights. “This leads to bloating constipation sluggish digestion and a feeling of heaviness.” He adds that prolonged sitting can cause stagnation in the gut which triggers inflammation slows metabolism and leaves you feeling tired during work hours.
The gastroenterologist emphasizes that the digestive system is far more complex than just transporting food. Muscles nerves and gut bacteria all play a role in maintaining healthy digestion. A sedentary routine combined with a high-calorie diet can make matters worse causing gas abdominal discomfort and long-term metabolic issues.
How to Protect Gut Health at a Desk Job
To counter the effects of prolonged sitting Dr Ganesan suggests simple lifestyle changes. Stand up or walk around every 45 minutes even if it’s just to take a phone call. Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration as it is a major cause of constipation. Add fiber-rich foods like fruits vegetables and whole grains to your diet but remember fiber alone cannot substitute physical movement. Light stretches short walks and daily exercise are key to keeping the intestines active and reducing gut-related problems.
His final advice: if you feel bloated or sluggish during work hours start moving. Even standing while talking or pacing around your office can make a difference.
