Your pancreas quietly supports some of your body’s most essential functions, from managing blood sugar to aiding digestion. Though often overlooked, this organ responds directly to your everyday lifestyle choices. What you eat, how active you are, and the habits you practice consistently all influence how well your pancreas works over time. With rising cases of metabolic diseases and pancreatic disorders, experts stress the need for preventive care through small but meaningful changes.
To help people understand what truly supports pancreatic health, HT Lifestyle consulted Dr Abhimanyu Kapoor, director of surgical gastroenterology at Regency Health Kanpur. He explained that the pancreas plays a dual role—producing enzymes for digestion and releasing hormones like insulin to stabilise blood sugar levels. When the pancreas is neglected, it becomes vulnerable to conditions such as diabetes, acute or chronic pancreatitis and in severe cases pancreatic cancer. Dr Kapoor noted that India already has over 10 crore adults living with diabetes, a condition closely tied to pancreatic strain and long-term dysfunction.
He further highlighted that poor dietary habits, stress, irregular meal timings, excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco use have contributed to a significant increase in pancreatic problems, especially among young adults. According to him, the pancreas can tolerate occasional strain but is not designed to handle years of unhealthy choices without consequences.
1. Choose a balanced and nourishing diet
What you eat has a profound impact on how smoothly your pancreas functions. Dr Kapoor recommends including whole grains, vegetables, fruits and lean protein sources in your daily meals to support digestion and regulate glucose levels. He cautions that frequent consumption of refined carbs, deep-fried foods, sugary desserts and saturated fats can overload the pancreas and raise inflammation. He also pointed out the concerning rise in reliance on quick meals, with many urban working professionals ordering outside food weekly, a pattern seen increasingly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
2. Reduce or eliminate alcohol and tobacco
Alcohol and tobacco are two of the biggest threats to pancreatic health. Dr Kapoor explained that alcohol-related pancreatitis is common in hospitals across India, and even moderate but consistent intake can cause silent inflammation. When combined with tobacco use, the risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer increases significantly. Avoiding these substances or reducing them as much as possible is one of the most effective ways to safeguard the pancreas.
3. Maintain healthy metabolic markers
Your metabolic health has a direct connection with pancreatic function. According to Dr Kapoor, keeping blood sugar, triglycerides and body weight within a healthy range is essential to prevent strain. He advises regular check-ups to monitor blood sugar and cholesterol levels, staying physically active for at least 30 minutes daily and maintaining a stable weight. He emphasised that obesity, lack of exercise and high-fat diets weaken pancreatic efficiency over time.
Early warning signs to never ignore
Dr Kapoor urges individuals to seek medical attention if they notice symptoms such as unexplained abdominal pain, nausea or persistent digestive discomfort. These may signal underlying pancreatic issues, including gallstone-related complications. He strongly discourages relying on painkillers, herbal remedies or self-medication without professional guidance.
