A leading gastroenterologist has highlighted a lesser-known factor behind elevated blood pressure, revealing that high blood pressure is not solely caused by salt intake or stress. Dr. Pal Manickam shared important insights on Instagram explaining that persistent high blood pressure over 120/80 on multiple occasions is a serious signal that requires immediate attention to avoid future health complications.
Dr. Manickam points out that while salt and stress are commonly blamed, the real hidden cause often lies in insulin resistance. He explained that high blood pressure results from stiffened and thickened blood vessels, which restrict blood flow to vital organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, potentially causing heart disease, stroke, or kidney failure.
Insulin resistance occurs when the hormone insulin, which manages blood sugar from food, loses effectiveness due to overuse—often from habits like overeating or eating late at night. This condition can silently increase blood pressure as excess sugar converts into fat, causing inflammation and damage to blood vessels.
The gastroenterologist warns that consuming a second helping of rice or late-night meals could be major contributors to persistent high blood pressure, beyond just salty snacks or pickles. He urges individuals to regularly monitor their blood pressure and take preventive steps, especially if readings frequently exceed 120/80.
