Google has officially announced the September Pixel Drop, bringing with it a wider rollout of the Material 3 Expressive design language to more Pixel devices along with important software improvements. Initially introduced with the Android 16 QPR1 update on the Pixel 10 series, the new UI design is now expanding to the Pixel 6 series and newer models, including the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.
The update not only enhances the visual design but also introduces battery health fixes, improved fingerprint recognition, and better stability across cameras, Bluetooth, and call audio quality. Google has also confirmed that the September security patch is part of this rollout, ensuring better system protection for eligible devices.
With Material 3 Expressive, Pixel users will notice redesigned status bar icons, live wallpaper effects, customizable lock screen options, and improved Quick Settings. The new layout allows users to choose between compact icons or expanded tiles, offering up to 16 app shortcuts in a 4×4 grid. Media controls have been refreshed with a pill-shaped play button and rectangular pause button, adding a modern look to the interface.
In addition to the design update, Google is rolling out new features for Pixel Buds Pro 2, including Adaptive Audio that adjusts sound according to the environment and Loud Noise Protection for safer listening. Another major quality-of-life feature has been added to Google Maps, where walking and biking directions can now sync automatically with a connected Pixel Watch for a seamless navigation experience.
