Lionel Messi’s upcoming India tour is being hailed as one of the biggest sporting moments in the country’s modern history—but the journey to make it happen was far from simple. The man behind the monumental project, Satadru Dutta, spent over two years building the foundation that ultimately brought Messi to India for a four-city visit this October.

Messi’s return comes more than a decade after his first trip in 2011, when he captained Argentina in a friendly match in Kolkata. This time, his appearance is not tied to a game but to a celebration of football culture and his massive fanbase in India. In a nation where cricket dominates, Messi’s World Cup victory in 2022 sparked nationwide celebrations, proving the depth of Indian football fandom.

Dutta, a veteran sports promoter known for bringing Pele, Maradona, and Ronaldinho to India, shared that the spark for Messi’s visit began the moment he watched Argentina lift the World Cup in Qatar. His first step was inviting Emiliano Martínez to India, followed by Ronaldinho, both of whom played key roles in strengthening Messi’s confidence about visiting.

One of the most unconventional steps in Dutta’s journey was a massive Durga Puja tribute—a larger-than-life statue of Messi that caught the attention of global fans and eventually became his gateway to connect with Messi’s father, Jorge Messi. Numerous meetings and eight months of preparation led Dutta to finally meet Messi himself in February 2025, where he presented his proposal and showcased the Durga Puja tribute that became the “game-changer.” Messi agreed immediately, leaving the formalities to his father.

Despite being an admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo, Dutta revealed he nearly brought the Portuguese icon to India in 2020 before the plans were halted by Covid-19. Messi’s World Cup triumph shifted the timeline and accelerated his efforts to bring the Argentine legend first.

The upcoming tour across Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi will follow a consistent format—youth mentorship, football masterclasses, and interactive sessions focused on inspiring young players. Messi will be accompanied by teammates Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez throughout the tour.

Dutta clarified that despite online rumours, no meet-and-greet access is included with high-tier tickets priced up to ₹82,600. The event is designed as a celebration of Messi’s football legacy, not a commercial fan-interaction session. He also dismissed false reports about Messi participating in cricket activities, hinting instead that several major personalities will attend the events.

Messi’s India tour marks a defining moment—one shaped by persistence, cultural passion, community devotion, and a promoter who believed India deserved a historic meeting with the greatest footballer of all time.
