India’s preparations for the business end of the T20 World Cup 2026 remain unchanged despite Australia crashing out in the group stage, with the team insisting their focus is firmly on performance rather than permutations.
Australia’s early elimination has slightly eased India’s path to the semi-finals, as Zimbabwe replace the five-time champions in the Super 8s group alongside India, South Africa and the West Indies. The upcoming clash between India and Zimbabwe is now scheduled for Thursday February 26.
Speaking ahead of India’s Group A match against the Netherlands, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak made it clear that the Indian camp is unfazed by Australia’s exit. He explained that the team had already anticipated multiple scenarios and was prepared regardless of who qualified. According to Kotak, the loss Australia suffered earlier against Zimbabwe had already hinted that the group could throw up surprises, especially given the challenging playing conditions.
Kotak added that India’s mindset remains simple and consistent. Whether facing a traditional heavyweight like Australia or an emerging side such as Zimbabwe, the team’s approach will not change. The defending champions are focused on executing their plans and delivering strong performances match by match rather than dwelling on results elsewhere.
Australia’s campaign unraveled after a series of setbacks. Injuries to key fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood weakened their attack, while captain Mitchell Marsh missed the opening fixtures due to fitness concerns. Although Australia started with a win over Ireland, a shocking defeat to Zimbabwe and a comprehensive loss to Sri Lanka sealed their fate. Their hopes were finally dashed when the Ireland versus Zimbabwe match was washed out, leaving no route to the Super 8s.
With Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka advancing from Group B, India now look ahead with clarity and calm, intent on defending their T20 World Cup crown without distraction.
