iPhone 16 Series May Not Deliver Promised USB 3 Speed Improvements Despite Apple’s Claims

Date:

iPhone 16 Series Could Lack Expected USB 3 Speed Enhancements

Overview The iPhone 16 series technical specifications indicate that Apple may not be enhancing USB C transfer speeds.

Key Points

  • iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus offer transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps.
  • iPhone 16 Pro models offer transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps.
  • The iPhone 15 Pro models had the same transfer speed.

Detailed Report The iPhone 16 series was launched with significant excitement at Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event on Monday. During this event, Apple highlighted several hardware and software upgrades for the new iPhone generation. However, it seems the company’s statement regarding “faster USB 3 speeds” might have been misinterpreted, as the new iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max models do not actually offer improved transfer speeds.

Apple’s announcement of “faster USB 3 speeds” for the iPhone 16 Pro models has caused some confusion. According to a MacRumors report, the technical specifications reveal that the transfer speeds for the base and Pro models are 480 Mbps and 10 Gbps, respectively. These speeds are identical to those of the iPhone 15 Pro and non-Pro models. Thus, there is no actual improvement in transfer speeds for the new iPhone models.

Apple’s communication may have intended to highlight that the iPhone 16 Pro models, equipped with the A18 Pro chipset, offer faster data transfer compared to the non-Pro models, which use the A18 SoC. This comparison would hold if the claim was against the iPhone 14 Pro, the last generation featuring the Lightning cable.

Users seeking 10 Gbps transfer speeds with the iPhone 16 Pro models will need to purchase the appropriate USB-C cable separately. USB 3 is the third generation of the Universal Serial Bus standard, known for faster data transfer speeds than previous versions.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max also feature larger displays with a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen, respectively, along with a 120Hz refresh rate (ProMotion) and up to 2,000 units of peak brightness.
