Apple’s newest flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, has sparked overwhelming demand just days after pre-orders opened, with the Cosmic Orange colourway selling out across both the US and India. The company’s online and in-store pre-order systems were quickly flooded, leading to stock shortages across all storage options for the popular shade.

The iPhone 17 series, launched earlier this month, includes the iPhone 17 iPhone 17 Pro iPhone Air and the high-end iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple officially opened pre-orders on September 12 across select regions, with general sales scheduled to begin September 19. Within just three days, the Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max had become unavailable for pre-order pick-up, while the Deep Blue and Silver variants remained in limited supply.

According to Apple representatives, the shortage is a direct result of record-breaking pre-orders. They also confirmed that their logistics and backend teams are working to restock the Cosmic Orange option as soon as possible. Customers in India will find that the entire iPhone 17 Pro Max lineup is currently unavailable for in-store pre-order pick-up, while even the iPhone 17 Pro in Cosmic Orange has been removed from pick-up options.

For eager buyers, there is still hope: Apple is expected to make a limited quantity of iPhone 17 units available for walk-in customers on September 19. These will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, but demand is expected to exceed supply.

Industry reports suggest the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are facing tighter availability compared to the base iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Apple’s supply chain appears to be prioritising entry-level models in early shipments, with some Indian outlets receiving just 50 Pro units in batches of 500 devices. Higher-capacity models are even scarcer, and Apple’s website currently indicates delivery delays extending into late September and early October.

Alongside the iPhone 17 series, Apple has also opened pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 11 Watch Ultra 3 Watch SE 3 and the new AirPods Pro 3, giving customers multiple reasons to upgrade their devices this month.

The demand surge reinforces Apple’s dominance in the premium smartphone market while highlighting the growing popularity of unique colourways like Cosmic Orange, which is rapidly becoming the standout choice for 2025’s flagship launch.
