Apple may be preparing subtle yet significant changes for its upcoming iPhone 18 lineup, expected to debut in September 2026. According to new leaks, the series could introduce a more compact version of the Dynamic Island, though the highly anticipated under-display Face ID technology may still be reserved for future models.
The Dynamic Island, first introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, replaced the bulky notch with a pill-shaped cutout that doubled as an interactive hub for alerts, notifications, and real-time activities. Despite early speculation that Apple would shrink the feature with the iPhone 17 series, the recently launched iPhone 17 models—including the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—retained the familiar design.
Tipster Instant Digital, posting on Weibo, now suggests that the iPhone 18 will sport a narrower Dynamic Island. However, under-display Face ID and a hidden front camera will not yet be part of the design, leaving the cutout intact for at least another generation. This indicates Apple is taking a gradual approach toward its ultimate goal of achieving a seamless all-screen iPhone.
Reports also hint that Apple is targeting a major design overhaul with the iPhone 19 series in 2027. That launch will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone and is rumored to introduce under-display Face ID alongside a hole-punch camera design. Until then, the Dynamic Island is expected to evolve slowly, refining size and integration while continuing to serve as a functional centerpiece for iOS.
The iPhone 17 series, announced at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event last week, already brought several updates such as iOS 26, ProMotion displays, upgraded 48-megapixel rear cameras, 18-megapixel selfie cameras, and AI-powered Apple Intelligence features. Yet with the iPhone 18 already generating buzz, Apple fans are eager to see how the Dynamic Island continues to transform the iPhone experience.
