Chennai Super Kings have had a disappointing start to their IPL 2026 campaign, suffering consecutive defeats and raising concerns about both performance and team balance. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, in particular, is under scrutiny after failing to deliver with the bat in the opening matches, adding pressure on his leadership early in the season.
After finishing at the bottom in the previous edition, CSK entered the new season with hopes of a strong comeback. However, the team has struggled to find rhythm, especially in bowling, where they have failed to take crucial wickets at key moments. The much-talked-about opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson has also not produced the expected results so far.
Sanju Samson’s inclusion in the squad through a high-profile trade generated excitement, with many seeing him as a potential long-term successor to MS Dhoni. Despite his impressive performances in the recent T20 World Cup, Samson has yet to make an impact in the early stages of the tournament.
Cricket experts Michael Vaughan and Simon Doull have now raised questions about the dynamics between Gaikwad and Samson. They suggested that the presence of a strong leader like Samson could unintentionally create pressure on Gaikwad, especially given CSK’s history of successful wicketkeeper-captains.
Vaughan highlighted the delicate situation, noting that while the franchise continues to support Gaikwad as captain, bringing in a proven leader like Samson could influence the dressing room environment. Doull agreed, indicating that such scenarios can create internal competition even if not openly expressed.
At the same time, Samson himself faces significant expectations following his move to Chennai. As a player familiar with conditions in the southern part of India, there is added anticipation for him to perform consistently and justify the trade. Experts believe he needs to draw confidence from his recent international form and focus on delivering impactful performances.
With both players under pressure and the team searching for its first win, CSK will be hoping that the Gaikwad-Samson partnership clicks soon and helps stabilize their campaign moving forward.
