Shreyas Iyer admitted that poor execution with the ball cost Punjab Kings their first defeat of the IPL 2026 after a high-scoring clash against Rajasthan Royals.
Batting first, Punjab Kings put up an imposing total of 222 for 4, with a powerful late innings push giving them what appeared to be a match-winning score. However, Rajasthan Royals chased down the target with confidence, thanks to strong contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top, followed by a composed finish from Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey.
Reflecting on the result, Shreyas Iyer praised his batting unit but made it clear that the bowling department failed to deliver in crucial moments. He highlighted that while the total was competitive on a slightly slow pitch, the inability to execute key plans such as yorkers and slower deliveries proved costly.
Punjab Kings did show signs of control during the middle overs, particularly through the spin attack led by Yuzvendra Chahal and supported by Harpreet Brar, who impressed in his first appearance of the season. Despite this, Rajasthan’s middle order held firm and accelerated at the right time to seal the chase.
Discussing the nature of modern T20 cricket, Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that aggressive batting from the outset makes it increasingly challenging for bowlers. Still, he reiterated that execution remains the deciding factor in tight games.
The defeat ended Punjab Kings’ unbeaten run, but the captain remained composed and optimistic about the campaign ahead. He dismissed fatigue as an excuse despite a tight schedule and emphasized the importance of regrouping and improving in the next matches.
Looking forward, the team will shift its home base from Mullanpur to Dharamshala, with Shreyas Iyer keeping the focus simple—bounce back stronger and return to winning ways.
