Italy could yet find a pathway into the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite missing out during qualification, as FIFA considers contingency measures linked to uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation. The development comes after Iran’s request to shift its scheduled matches away from the United States was declined, keeping fixtures locked to their original venues.
The Italian national team was eliminated from qualification following a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European playoff final, ending their direct hopes of reaching the tournament. However, new discussions within FIFA have opened a potential alternative route.
Iran is currently set to begin its World Cup journey on June 16 with a match against New Zealand, followed by fixtures against Belgium in California and Egypt in Seattle. Due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, concerns have been raised regarding Iran’s ability to compete in the United States, prompting the earlier request to move matches to Mexico — a proposal FIFA ultimately rejected due to logistical challenges.
Reports suggest that FIFA is preparing for a worst-case scenario in which Iran withdraws from the competition. In such a case, a special playoff tournament could be organized involving four teams — two from Asia and two from Europe — consisting of nations that narrowly missed qualification. Italy could potentially be among the European sides considered for this opportunity.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reassured that, as of now, Iran remains part of the tournament and matches will proceed as planned. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also confirmed that fixtures will stay in their assigned locations across the United States.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali has expressed concerns about security guarantees, suggesting that participation will ultimately depend on assurances provided in the coming weeks.
While no official decision has been made regarding any replacement scenario, the possibility of Italy re-entering the competition remains dependent on unfolding geopolitical developments and FIFA’s final stance.
