Legendary filmmaker James Cameron has spoken out strongly against Netflix’s reported plan to acquire Warner Bros Discovery warning that such a move could seriously damage the global film industry. In a formal letter addressed to US Senator Mike Lee Cameron described the potential takeover as deeply harmful to traditional cinema and the wider creative workforce.
The acclaimed director behind Avatar Titanic and The Terminator franchises argued that merging one of Hollywood’s last major studios with a streaming-first giant would accelerate the decline of theatrical filmmaking. According to Cameron the ripple effects could include widespread cinema closures reduced film production and large-scale job losses across the sector.
Cameron emphasised that while his films perform well across digital platforms his primary commitment remains with the theatrical experience. He warned that Netflix’s business model which prioritises streaming releases conflicts with the long-established cinema ecosystem that supports thousands of jobs in production distribution and exhibition.
He further noted that Warner Bros represents one of the few remaining studios built around theatrical releases and that absorbing it into a streaming-led company could weaken the entire system. Cameron also raised concerns about the global impact saying the United States’ long-standing leadership in film exports and cultural influence could be significantly reduced if large-scale theatrical filmmaking contracts.
Responding to the filmmaker’s concerns Senator Mike Lee who chairs the Senate antitrust subcommittee acknowledged receiving feedback from several industry figures. He confirmed that lawmakers are reviewing the potential merger closely and indicated that further hearings may be scheduled to examine its broader implications.
Netflix executives have attempted to ease fears surrounding the proposed deal. Ted Sarandos Netflix co chief executive has stated that acquiring Warner Bros Discovery could actually benefit cinemas by enabling Netflix productions to reach theatres more widely through Warner Bros’ established distribution network. He has argued that the merger would increase rather than decrease the number of films shown on the big screen.
