James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman reboot is expected to make a powerful impact at the US box office, with early projections suggesting a robust $135 million opening weekend. The film, set to premiere on July 11, marks the first major theatrical release under the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, and its performance could define the trajectory of the reimagined DC cinematic universe.

According to data shared by The Hollywood Reporter, research from the National Research Group (NRG) places the film’s opening estimates in the range of $125 million to $145 million. However, DC Studios and Warner Bros. are reportedly more cautious, forecasting a launch between $90 million and $125 million. Some industry experts, influenced by the film’s strong online buzz and increasing fan engagement, are predicting a debut as high as $175 million—potentially surpassing 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened at $166 million.

If these optimistic forecasts hold true, the Superman reboot could become the biggest opening in DC history, edging past Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and revitalizing the franchise under its new creative direction. The film is also expected to outperform 2013’s Man of Steel, which debuted with $116 million.

Starring David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent, the cast also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and appearances by Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced. Directed by Gunn himself, the film offers a refreshed take on Superman’s origin story and introduces Krypto the Superdog, a fan-favorite character, into the cinematic universe.

The film’s release comes at a pivotal time for DC, with Gunn and Safran aiming to reset and revitalize the superhero franchise. With significant expectations riding on its box office performance, Superman could serve as the foundation for a new era of storytelling within the DC Universe.
