Hollywood star James McAvoy encountered an unexpected incident in Toronto late Monday night while celebrating the premiere of his directorial debut California Schemin’ at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 (TIFF).
According to reports, the altercation occurred just before midnight at a local bar when an unidentified individual struck the 46-year-old actor. Eyewitnesses revealed that McAvoy attempted to calm the aggressor before others intervened and escorted the man out of the venue.
Sources close to the situation explained that James had been enjoying a casual gathering with producers of his film when the intoxicated man was being removed from the bar. With his back turned, McAvoy was unexpectedly punched. Despite the incident, he was not harmed, laughed off the situation, and chose to continue the evening with his colleagues.
The confrontation followed shortly after the world premiere of California Schemin’ at TIFF 2025 on September 6. The film tells the true story of Scottish rappers Gavin Bain and his partner, who were rejected by the London music industry due to their accents in the early 2000s. Reinventing themselves as Silibil N’ Brains, they posed as American rappers to chase success.
In interviews before the premiere, McAvoy praised Gavin and his partner, likening them to modern-day folk heroes. “When the system’s rigged against you, try to undermine it or circumvent it. Game the game!” he remarked, highlighting his admiration for their bold attempt.
The film stars Seamus McLean Ross as Gavin and Samuel Bottomley as his partner, with McAvoy making a cameo appearance. Reflecting on his first-time directorial role, the actor admitted the journey was both stressful and rewarding, calling it “the most creative thing” he has ever done.
