Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has vowed to step out of his comfort zone and revamp his playing style following his four-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open 2025 final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York. Alcaraz claimed his sixth Grand Slam title with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, reclaiming the world No.1 ranking in the process.

The Spaniard’s adaptable and aggressive performance proved too much for Sinner, who admitted his game had become predictable. “I was very predictable today on court. He mixed things up, changed the rhythm, and played his style. Now it’s on me to make changes,” Sinner said after the match.

Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, revealed that the team had trained specifically to counter Sinner’s strengths, working on variation and adaptability. That preparation paid off as Alcaraz neutralized Sinner’s power-driven baseline game with a blend of drop shots, slices, and attacking returns.

Sinner acknowledged that his reliance on consistency and baseline dominance works against most opponents but falters against Alcaraz’s versatility. “I didn’t use serve-volley or drop shots enough. Against Carlos, you have to leave your comfort zone. That’s what I’ll work on moving forward,” Sinner explained.

The Italian, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No.1 for 65 weeks, is now focused on adding unpredictability to his game, even if it means taking short-term risks. “I’m going to aim to maybe even lose some matches while trying new things. I need to become less predictable if I want to improve as a player,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Sinner has been challenged to evolve. Novak Djokovic pointed out his lack of variety during their Wimbledon 2022 clash, advice that pushed Sinner to modify his game and climb to the top of men’s tennis. Now, with Alcaraz as his primary rival, the Italian is once again in the process of redefining his style.

Their rivalry, which began in 2021, has already featured 15 meetings. With Sinner determined to adjust and Alcaraz continuing to grow, tennis fans can expect many more thrilling encounters between the two players – a battle that could shape the future of the sport.
