Jannik Sinner Reflects on Rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz: ‘He Currently Has the Edge

Date:

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have met on the court ten times since 2021, with Alcaraz holding a 6-4 advantage over the Italian. As Rafael Nadal nears retirement following the Davis Cup finals this November, Novak Djokovic stands as the last active member of the iconic Big Three, with tennis legends Roger Federer and Andy Murray already retired. Djokovic achieved Olympic gold in 2024, but the primary focus this year has been the intense rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner. Their encounters have included landmark matches like the 2024 French Open semifinal, where Alcaraz edged out Sinner in a grueling five-set match, and the unforgettable 2022 US Open quarterfinal, also won by Alcaraz in five sets. This year, Sinner finally overcame Alcaraz in the Six Kings Slam final with a hard-fought three-set victory.

In a candid interview with La Stampa, Sinner acknowledged Alcaraz’s current advantage, admitting, “On the court, he does things that I don’t. He has a solid slice, impressive volleys, and overall, he has something more right now. But that’s okay because it shows I have room to grow. My strengths lie in my high-paced game and mental resilience. I am a more consistent player, and when I need to, I can accelerate to clinch the win.” Despite his achievements, Sinner remains grounded, remarking, “Winning or losing doesn’t change me. I avoid the spotlight and stay close to those who matter most, especially my family and team.”

The 2024 Grand Slam season saw Nadal largely absent and Djokovic struggling. Meanwhile, Sinner and Alcaraz divided the Grand Slam titles, with Sinner triumphing at the Australian Open and US Open, and Alcaraz securing the French Open and Wimbledon titles, amplifying their burgeoning rivalry and leaving fans eagerly anticipating their future matches.
