ABC has suspended late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial monologue about the shooting that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The decision has ignited a nationwide debate over media responsibility, political bias, and freedom of speech.

On September 15, during his opening monologue, Kimmel addressed the killing of Charlie Kirk, pointing to attempts by right-wing commentators to politicize the tragedy. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid (Tyler Robinson) who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel told his audience.

He then shifted focus to Donald Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s death. Kimmel aired a clip of the former president answering questions but pivoting to ballroom construction at the White House mid-response. Mocking the moment, Kimmel quipped, “Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief. Construction. Demolition. Construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

Kimmel played additional footage of Trump on Fox News where, once again, Trump diverted to ballroom construction while discussing the tragedy. Critics argued that Kimmel’s commentary was harsh and insensitive, especially toward a recent murder victim. Nexstar, one of ABC’s largest affiliate operators, quickly labeled the remarks “offensive and inappropriate.”

ABC soon released a statement confirming the suspension: “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely.” The move drew praise from Donald Trump, who posted on Truth Social congratulating ABC and labeling Kimmel a “sick freak.” Trump tied the suspension to his long-standing critique of late-night hosts, suggesting Jimmy Fallon could be next after Colbert’s exit.

Hollywood voices, however, came out strongly against the suspension. Comedians and actors including Wanda Sykes, Ben Stiller, Kathy Griffin, and Sophia Bush criticized the decision, calling it a dangerous precedent for censorship. Politicians such as California Governor Gavin Newsom and Senator Cory Booker echoed concerns, warning that silencing hosts for political satire undermines free speech.

For now, ABC affiliates have replaced Jimmy Kimmel Live! with syndicated programming while the network considers long-term options. Whether the show returns remains uncertain, but the suspension has once again placed late-night television at the center of America’s cultural and political divide.
