In a dramatic turn of events at the FIFA Club World Cup final, Chelsea’s Joao Pedro has broken his silence about the heated scuffle involving Paris Saint-Germain’s manager Luis Enrique. The tension erupted moments after Chelsea’s emphatic 3-0 triumph over PSG at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, where Cole Palmer starred with a brilliant brace and Pedro added the third before half-time to secure the trophy for the London club ahead of the new Premier League season.
Despite the celebratory scenes, tempers quickly flared when PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi confronted Chelsea’s young midfielder Andrey Santos on the pitch. Stepping in to defend his teammate, Pedro stood his ground but found himself shoved in the face by Luis Enrique during the melee, causing him to stumble backwards in a shocking moment that went viral on social media.
Speaking about the post-match fight, Pedro told Sportv that he acted instinctively to protect his friend: “I went to protect Andrey I saw the PSG players surrounding him. Like a good Brazilian I stepped in to back my teammate. A lot of people came running and in the middle of the chaos I got pushed. That’s football sometimes. They didn’t take the loss well but we stayed united.”
Luis Enrique addressed the altercation too, insisting his intention was never to escalate the situation: “What happened after the final whistle was unnecessary. I wanted to split up the players and calm things down. There was so much emotion after the loss and a lot of pushing but this is something we should always avoid in football.”
Chelsea’s dominant performance was topped by Cole Palmer, who claimed the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player. Palmer ripped through PSG’s defence, bagging his first goal with a clever finish before doubling his tally with another precise strike in the first half. Just before the break, he turned provider for Pedro’s clinical third, ensuring the Blues lifted the prestigious Club World Cup trophy in style.
