The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards turned into a trending topic not just for the winners but also for what viewers couldn’t hear. Comedian and host John Oliver, who once again won the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series for his show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, had parts of his 15-second acceptance speech censored during the live telecast on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

As Oliver walked on stage to accept his award, the broadcast muted him twice, leaving fans and audiences puzzled. Social media users were quick to speculate and fill in the blanks about what he might have said. According to posts circulating on X (formerly Twitter), Oliver appeared to jokingly target fellow comedian Nate Bargatze. Reports claim he said, “F–k you Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you – and you can add a f— to the swear jar as well.” These claims, however, have not been independently verified.

The sudden censorship sparked a wave of online reactions. Many viewers expressed confusion about why Oliver’s words were cut. “So who’s gonna tell me what John Oliver said for them to cut his speech off of live TV because I need to know,” wrote one user. Another added, “Did CBS really bleep John Oliver twice or was it a streaming glitch?”

Others speculated about whether the bleep was due to swearing or a political remark, given Oliver’s reputation for sharp commentary on global issues. “Did he swear or was it Palestine? He’s usually politically vocal,” one fan posted.

Interestingly, Oliver wasn’t the only Emmy winner censored on the big night. Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, also had a portion of her speech muted. After thanking her team, she ended with, “Go Birds, f— ICE, and free Palestine,” which was censored on-air but quickly circulated online through unfiltered clips.

The dual incidents have fueled debates about how far live television censorship should go and whether audiences should get the uncensored version of acceptance speeches. Regardless, the moment made John Oliver’s latest Emmy win one of the most talked-about highlights of the ceremony.
