Renowned film composer John Powell has been confirmed as the music composer for Illumination’s upcoming animated feature Minions & Monsters. The project further strengthens his legacy as one of the most influential composers in modern animation.

Powell, who earned Academy Award nominations for his work on How to Train Your Dragon and Wicked, is reuniting with Illumination after previously composing for Migration and The Lorax.

The new film is part of the hugely successful Despicable Me universe and serves as the third spin-off centered on the beloved Minions. Known for their chaotic energy and comedic loyalty, the yellow characters will take center stage in a story that explores their rise in Hollywood, their downfall, and their attempt to fix the chaos they unleash.

Described as a fun and over-the-top adventure, the movie blends humor with a tribute to classic Hollywood storytelling. This gives John Powell the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of musical styles to match the film’s dynamic narrative.

The project is directed by Pierre Coffin, who previously helmed several entries in the Despicable Me series and has also been the iconic voice behind the Minions since their debut. The film features an impressive voice cast including Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and Trey Parker, along with Bobby Moynihan and Phil LaMarr.

The screenplay has been written by Brian Lynch in collaboration with Pierre Coffin, while production is led by Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan.

Over the years, John Powell has built an extensive portfolio, contributing to major films such as The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Solo A Star Wars Story, and Dont Worry Darling. His animation work includes Kung Fu Panda, Bolt, and the Ice Age franchise.

With over 25 animated projects to his name, Powell continues to lead the field in animation scoring. Minions & Monsters is scheduled for release on July 1, adding another high-profile title to his already impressive career.
