Over three decades after Jurassic Park changed blockbuster filmmaking forever with its groundbreaking dinosaurs and Spielberg’s signature sense of wonder, the franchise is back with Jurassic World Rebirth. Acting as a soft reboot and spiritual successor, the seventh film in the series goes back to basics with a new story, new characters, and a creative shift behind the camera. This time director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla Rogue One) and original screenwriter David Koepp deliver a tighter more character-driven tale.

In this latest adventure, the world’s wild dinosaurs are mostly gone following the fallout of Dominion. However on a remote Caribbean island named Île Saint Hubert the last living dinos roam free. A powerful biotech company wants to capitalize on their DNA and sends a covert team to collect genetic samples. Scarlett Johansson stars as Zora Bennett an elite covert ops leader while Jonathan Bailey plays Henry Loomis a curious and thoughtful paleontologist. Mahershala Ali rounds out the main trio as sea captain Duncan Kincaid who must navigate dangerous waters while wrestling with his own grief and redemption arc.

Once on the island the team discovers not just the iconic prehistoric creatures but also a shocking new threat — the Distortus Rex a genetic hybrid that pushes the story into tense survival horror territory. As the crew battles dinosaurs genetic monsters and their own moral conflicts alliances shift and hidden agendas are exposed. There’s also a stranded family whose presence adds stakes and humanity to the unfolding chaos.

What Works Well

Jurassic World Rebirth succeeds where some recent sequels struggled. Gareth Edwards brings a grounded visual style with practical dinosaur effects atmospheric lighting and wide shots that emphasize scale and suspense instead of relying on excessive CGI. The cast elevates the material especially Scarlett Johansson who plays Zora with steely determination and subtlety and Mahershala Ali whose Kincaid is layered with grief and depth. Jonathan Bailey’s Loomis channels that classic Jurassic awe with a scientific perspective that feels authentic and relatable.

One standout moment features a herd of Titanosaurs at sunrise — a breathtaking sequence that mirrors the original’s sense of wonder while giving it fresh perspective through Loomis’s eyes. The narrative keeps the action sequences purposeful and rooted in character motivations rather than empty spectacle.

Where It Falls Short

Despite its strengths Rebirth can’t completely escape familiar tropes. The core plot — a shady corporation sending a team to an isolated island — follows a formula that feels predictable at times. Some set pieces echo the past films so closely that they lose the emotional spark that made the original stand out. In particular the big wide shots of dinosaurs can feel beautiful but emotionally distant lacking the intimacy that made the first Brachiosaurus scene so iconic.

Additionally the film tries to explore multiple themes like corporate greed ethical science survival and family bonds but struggles to give each idea the space it deserves. Certain character arcs like Xavier’s redemption feel underdeveloped and rushed as a result.

Final Thoughts

Jurassic World Rebirth isn’t a radical reinvention but it does mark a thoughtful course correction for the franchise. With a strong cast grounded thrills practical effects and moments of genuine tension it manages to recapture some of that old magic without leaning too heavily on nostalgia. Gareth Edwards brings a clear directorial vision and while the story doesn’t break bold new ground it feels like a satisfying respectful remix. As a possible final chapter or a fresh jumping-off point Rebirth proves there’s still life left in these dinosaurs.
