Kevin Hart is teaming up with filmmaker McG for an upcoming high-concept action comedy currently in development at Netflix. The untitled project is already drawing attention thanks to an impressive lineup of producers and writers behind the scenes.
Hart is set to lead the film, while McG will take the director’s chair, marking a return to the action-comedy genre that originally boosted his career with Charlie’s Angels. The project is being produced by Shawn Levy, alongside Dan Levine and Emily Morris under the banner of 21 Laps Entertainment, known for hit projects like Stranger Things. Also attached is Ryan Reynolds through his production company Maximum Effort.
Levy and Reynolds have a history of successful collaborations, having worked together on films such as Free Guy, The Adam Project, and Deadpool & Wolverine. For this film, however, they will contribute strictly as producers rather than on-screen talent.
The storyline follows two competing spies who unexpectedly meet during a Lamaze class attended with their pregnant partners. As their personal lives begin to overlap, their secret identities collide in humorous and risky ways, forcing them into an unlikely alliance while preparing for fatherhood.
The script is written by the duo Adam Nee and Aaron Nee, known for their work on The Lost City, along with Jonathan Tropper, who has collaborated with Levy on projects like This Is Where I Leave You. The screenplay is based on a short story by Sean Lewis.
Hart is also producing through his company Hartbeat, working with Luke Kelly-Clyne and Bryan Smiley. The actor continues to expand his presence on Netflix, with projects like The Roast of Kevin Hart and the comedy competition show Funny AF, along with the upcoming film 72 Hours directed by Tim Story.
McG, meanwhile, has built a strong relationship with Netflix in recent years, directing multiple projects including The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Rim of the World, The Uglies, and Family Switch starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms.
Before focusing on streaming projects, McG directed major films such as Terminator Salvation, We Are Marshall, and the spy-themed romantic action comedy This Means War starring Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon.
With a mix of comedy, action, and a unique premise centered around family life, this upcoming Netflix project is shaping up to be an entertaining addition to the platform’s growing slate of star-driven films.
