India’s new head coach Khalid Jamil has promised an aggressive approach for his first home match in charge as the national football team faces Singapore in a must-win clash to keep their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualification hopes alive.

Currently placed third in their group with just two points from three games, India must secure a victory to stay in contention, while Singapore, sitting on five points, can afford a draw. Jamil, known for his pragmatic tactics, revealed a change in strategy this time — “We will attack from the start,” he said confidently during the pre-match press conference in Margao, Goa.

India will also see several line-up changes, with Lalengmawia Ralte (Mawia) expected to return to the starting XI alongside Deepak Tangri in midfield. “Mawia has experience and has been playing well recently. It’s the right time to bring him back,” Jamil said. The coach acknowledged that India’s midfield struggled to control play in the previous 1-1 draw in Singapore and hinted at tactical adjustments to strengthen possession and tempo.

With Sandesh Jhingan suspended, Subhasish Bose could return from injury to reinforce the defense. Jamil emphasized the importance of using experienced players for this crucial fixture, noting the team’s determination to deliver in front of home fans.

Singapore coach Gavin Lee, meanwhile, urged his squad to stay composed and turn the disappointment of their previous game into motivation. “We need to channel our pain into performance,” he said. Forward Ilhan Fandi added that Singapore’s confidence remains high after their recent away win against Bangladesh.

The upcoming match at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, marks India’s first home meeting with Singapore since 2004, when a Renedy Singh penalty earned India a narrow 1-0 win. As both teams prepare for another intense battle, the atmosphere in South Goa’s football heartland is already electric — and India will be hoping divine intervention and home support combine to spark a much-needed revival.
